Loud Memories

Kyle and I have recently decided to buy my grandparents house and call it our own. I was going through documents to better organize my computer recently, and found this from when I first moved in to the house.

Grandma, Grandpa,
A tear or two
As I walk through your house
There is the living room
Where Joey, Dylan and I watched so many Disney movies it is hard to remember them all
Where Joey ate so many Nacho Doritos it drove our mother crazy
Where we opened one Christmas present every Christmas Eve
Where my last memory of Uncle Ray took place. He gave me a Husky stuffed animal for Christmas.
Where my Uncle Gordon checked my eyes, or my ears, because I didn't feel well, then patted me on the head and said “You’re good to go Toad.”
      Where the T.V. sat.
Where Grandma watched her soap operas. Every day. Without fail. While folding laundry.
Where Grandpa sat in his chair. Where he immediately rose from. To fulfill whatever wish Grandma gave him.
Where the baby grand piano stood, with Grandpa's picture on the wall beside it, handsome and pilot-esc.
Where the baby grand stood that Grandma's fingertips so elegantly touched, where Daddy's, and Joeys, and now Andy's fingertips touched.
Where we flung legos and giggled at the Disney shows Grandma recorded for us.
Where I now think of you as I tare the drapes you so carefully chose from the wall.
Where Daddy rips carpet we played on as children, under which we found carpet he played on as a child.
Where that mirror on the east wall sits ever present. A mirror that saw it all. You and Grandpa kissing. Daddy taking Mom on a date. Your 3 sons arguing over politics and things they were too knowledgeable about for their own good. Grandpa watching his sports. You watching your soaps. Your grandchildren raiding your candy bowl. Your grandchildren dancing the nights away to that song, Audra, do you remember the title? Opening presents next to your flocked Christmas Tree. Full bellies after incredible Thanksgiving dinners.

There is a hallway leading to three rooms...
Where I stood at the sliding door, smelling pancakes, homemade bread, and coffee.
Where a dark brown candy bowl sat in a hall way closet, filled with Snickers, Three Muskateers, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey Chocolate Bars, etc.
Where your bedroom sat. Quiet and perfect.
Where your bathroom sat, a treacherous sliding door awaiting four year old fingers that couldn't twist the lock and hollered out, sure we were trapped.
Where Daddy's old room sat, his memories bursting from it's walls

There is a basement.....
Where Dylan and I slept as kids, on the the pull out bed
Where Dylan pretended to be asleep, while steam rolling me and flailing his arms around in such a way that I was smacked in the head every couple minutes.
Where cousin Audra slept, and played Atari/Nintendo with us
Where cousin Audra taught me how to shuffle cards, including instructions on how to achieve the ultimate trick, the bridge
Where the laundry room scared me so much I had to run as I walked by it.

There is a garage....
       Where the Buick sat
Where we pulled the Buick from to go on adventures to "The Base" (Hill Air Force Base)
Where there sat an old green fridge that held all of our greatest desires when it came to soda or ice cream.

And finally, there is a kitchen. Your place, Grandma, the one I remember the most vivd details of you.

Where you baked fresh, homemade bread.
      Where you made pancakes
Where there was never a lack of homemade, to die for, delicious, food, where you never stopped, where you could never fall short, where you loved us the best way you knew how, good food, good smells, good auras.
Where there was banana cream pie
Where there was pumpkin pie, cream puffs, spaghetti sauce, cheese bread, garlic bread, stroganoff, that garlic salad I had five helpings of, toffee, ginger snaps, and every single thing that may or may not have tasted "rancid" to you
Where you pulled out a string of spaghetti and insisted I taste it, every time.
Where you saved just enough to give to the good ol' cocker spaniel Toby, because you loved him, no matter how fat he got.
Where you drank coffee out of those brown patterned cups, and we, Mom, Dad, Joe, Dylan, Andy, Uncle Gordon, Uncle Ray, Kathy, Greg, Bobby, Sophia, Audra and soon little Casie and Haylee ate meals on decorative pates, on peach colored, ruffled table clothes, next to flowered drapes...

Grandma, Grandpa
I am quiet when I walk through your house alone
I am quiet as I taste, smell, and feel each memory you left me.

Grandma, Grandpa
No matter how many drapes I pull from these walls, no matter how many pieces of carpet I send to the dump, you're still here,
and I am so relieved.
Relieved I can still smell your spices when I open cabinets in the kitchen.
Relieved I can still see your spaghetti boiling when I use the stovetop
Relieved I can still smell your homemade bread every time I use the toaster oven, sitting in the exact spot yours sat.

Grandma, Grandpa,

Don't ever go away. Please promise you and Grandpa will stay. I'm not sure how long I have with you both.
It is just for a moment, that I get to sense you here, that I am able to feel you with me on the back patio.
Every weed I pull, is for you.
Every wall I paint, is for you.
Every cupboard I clean, is for you.
But mostly, every cookie I bake, is for you.
Every bowl of pasta I boil, is for you.
Every piece of toffee I brake, is for you.

Grandma, as I walk through your house
I remember you.
And Grandpa.
The most adorable, most precious love story every.

Let's not forget the best words of advice, words we will never forget: Grandpa's ultimate words of wisdom.

"Take care of your mother."

Grandma, I miss you. Grandpa, I miss you.

Lucky for me, you are everywhere I look, and I treasure every moment I get to feel close to you. I love you.

I am a Hypocrite

I must admit, I am a hypocrite.

I counsel my students in Sport Psychology to avoid carrying their mistakes around with them.

I counsel them to avoid wasting time dwelling on things out of their control.

I counsel them to channel energy into that which they can control.

I counsel them to be confident, to trust themselves, and to not let their failures define them.

And then,

I allow my previous mistakes to weigh heavy on my shoulders, stubbornly refusing my own spirit forgiveness

I allow my anxieties over what others think clunk around in my heart

I allow my mind to clutter with worry over things entirely out of my control

I allow my voice to claim that, some things very much within my control, are nowhere near my reach.

I must admit I am a hypocrite

But even knowing I am

I feel my heart give a pitiful shrug and make a sad attempt at justifying why, in MY case, it’s different

In MY situation it’s just not that easy

In MY mind, it doesn’t work that way

MY mistakes are more significant

It’s justified

But

I must admit, I am STILL a hypocrite

Loss Makes It's Exit

At some point, loss makes it's still painful exit from your life.

Part 2
You are still here
You still exist
When you check this time
You are not just here
Not just physically
That’s easy
To suck in and suck out
And say
“Here”

Not only are you “here”
You are sincerely
Here
You breathe in
You breathe out
That’s easy now
But you do more than that
And you are proud of that feat

In and out
Yes and no
Up and down
You ride the ride
A couple times
Just
To ride the ride
But now you ride the ride
And you feel things
Excitement
Dread
Guilt
Strength
Happiness?
Maybe
But one day

You’re lying there
In and out
Chest rising
Chest lowering
And then it happens

Your mouth twitches
Your breath hesitates
And you smile
And then your eyes dart back and forth
As if to overanalyze the fact that your lips just curled upward
In a strange, unique shape
Your face isn’t familiar with

But yes, you smiled
You smiled
And what you smiled at
Might make you smile again
Heaven forbid
It might make you smile over and over again

Loss - Extraction

Those who have suffered loss, in any form - my loss may be different from others' but I can't help but imagine, it all feels similar to this

Extraction
You gasp, in shock of course, because you were never ready for it
And then, the gasp stops there - your head tilted back, your face grimaced
Waiting for it to leave you
At first you can do nothing
At first you’re motionless, eyes signaling the only presence of pain
Frightened, tortured, devastated
And then you start to react
As you feel it leave you
Centimeter, by centimeter, by centimeter
Inch, by inch, as you feel the loss quickening
You drop to your knees, mouth gaping, eyes freeing tears from previously boarded gates
And you let out the most pathetic sound
A last mournful note
For what was so deeply embedded in you
And so callously
Savagely
Pulled from your veins, your skin, your heart
Pulled from your body, leaving a limp skeleton
A miniscule fossil of what once existed there
It takes everything to look up
Centimeter by centimeter
Inch by inch
You feel it get easier
And you breathe out in exhaustion
A barely audible
“thank you”
Collapse
And watch nothing else but your own chest move up
And down
And up
And down
The movement slowly regressing
Just to make sure
It’s not only over
But you’re still here

You can write about fairytales

I used to write about fairytales
I used to smile even when my heart shattered
I used to smile, no matter what
Nothing was wrong
Don’t you see
This is a fairy tale, nothing can be wrong

I don’t write about fairytales anymore
Fairytales lack
Substance
Depth
But
Are so very abundant
In superficial façades
Talk
Pretty still pictures

You can write about fairytales
I’ll write about this instead

I want to be loved
So severely, I can feel it even when I hate you
I want to love
So severely, I can’t stop it, even when I hate you
I want your time, your mind, your body, your spirit
To collide with mine
And make a mess
A mess, beyond any mess

I want my breath to catch in my throat when you come close
My heart to race when you kiss me
At 25
And 26
And 27
And 28
And 29
And maybe once in awhile at 80

But
Also

I want my eyes to roll when you do that thing, the one thing I hate, you know that sneezing thing, that creates no immediate danger for me, but makes me want to strangle you for not sneezing correctly

I want to curl up, look at you and admit, I’ve gone through a taco bell drive through and a Mcdonalds drive through directly after because Cheesy Gourdita Crunches make my eyes light up, but fries make me sing

Basically, can I be me? If you promise to be you?

Corbyn Andrew

My sweet baby nephew was born last week. When my brother and sister-in-law told me they were expecting, I was in a very scary place. Lost, confused, hurt, discouraged, his sweet little spirit instantly took hold of me. To you, my Corbyn Andrew.

My saving grace,

You will never quite understand how loved you are

Never quite understand how important your prefect spirit is

So, when you forget your significance

When the world tells you you are inadequate

Remember

What you mean to me

Your little heartbeat made me grin

I put my lost hands on your mommy’s belly

And you made me giggle, while tears pushed against my stubborn gates

You have given me hope, given me purpose

You, little man, have fought through emptiness to find me

And you pulled me from depths I thought were too impenetrable

So when somebody makes you feel your existence is trivial

Remember

You made my heart sing when it wanted to sob

You made my spirit swell with love, when I thought it had none to give

You made me feel alive, when I felt near silence

And you continue to make me realize my own potential

As I recognize yours

When life tells you, you have little

Remember,

I love you,

and

you are my saving grace

The World According to Mrs. Wiser

I’ve been thinking lately. (I know, brace yourself right?)

About people who have told me to stop stressing over my job. That it’s just a job. Just a means to make some “dough.”
Ahem, If you know what teachers make, you know it’s not “dough.”

So, I’ve been thinking about those people who have told me it is unrealistic to think I am going to change lives. That I am wearing myself out for nothing.

I didn’t become a teacher to make “dough.”

I didn’t become a teacher to make it through each day by daydreaming about what I’d do with all that “dough” (“all that” – haha).

I became a teacher, to make a difference.

Shannon, this isn’t like the movies.

You’re damn right it’s not like the movies.

The movies don’t show the shit that goes through our heads.

The anxiety, the frustration, the enlightenment, the anger, the joy, the disappointment, the depression, the hopelessness, and seconds of delight.

They show about 2 seconds of frustration and 2 hours of kids eyes being miraculously opened and changed… Oh how I wish!

But,

I became a teacher to make kids think.

I became a teacher to make them try harder than they think they need to.

I became a teacher to watch minds open to things they were closed to before.

I became a teacher because teenagers are alive, and I feel alive, and I love being around them. There is so much life in them; life hasn’t been able to knock them down right on their faces enough. Although, sadly, for some they’ve been knocked down much harder than that.

But for the most part, they are vibrant, and they make me feel vibrant. They make me laugh. They surprise me.

They disappoint me too. That part sucks.

I know, I won’t be able to make a mark on every student that walks through my door, but you’re smoking meth if you think I’m not going to try, and keep trying.

I know, most of my kids hate literature and hate writing, and may never cherish those two things the way I do.

But I don’t just teach English, or psychology, I teach life. Life according to Mrs. Wiser.

And maybe, just maybe, they’ll learn something from my mistakes. Maybe they’ll take something away from my ramblings. If anything I hope they take away the idea that not only can they do anything they want, they can be whoever they want.

So to all of you out there, working 9-5, and making “dough.” That’s great, and I suppose I could just make “dough” too, although it would be a significantly small amount of  “dough.” But, I don’t want to just trudge through my days. I want to be 45 and have light bursting from my eyes, excitement glowing from my smile, and a crazy desire for knowledge still.

I know I can’t affect them all, I can’t impact each one of their lives, I can’t change their attitudes, or make them love literature (honestly, who really does besides English teachers and professors…).

I don’t care. Because if I just have ONE student that takes something meaningful, eye-opening, or just plain hilarious away from being in my class… I’ll be satisfied. And I will bust my ass learning everything I can possibly learn to help them through this spontaneous, often unfair journey, even if it is just that one student.

Okay, I’ll shut up now.
And to lighten the mood, I need this.
